Motorcycle Touring in Bulgaria: The Roads Worth Crossing Europe For

4 July 2026

Back to blog

Empty mountain passes, hairpins with monastery views, and fuel-stop coffee that costs less than the tip you'd leave in the Alps. Bulgaria might be Europe's last great under-ridden motorcycle country — here's where to point the front wheel.

Every motorcyclist in Europe knows the famous roads — the Alpine passes with their tour buses, the coastal routes with their speed cameras, the "legendary" corners you share with forty other bikes on any given Sunday. And then there's Bulgaria: a country crossed by two major mountain ranges, laced with smooth-enough asphalt over high passes, where the traffic thins out ten minutes beyond any city and a mountain road can be genuinely, gloriously yours for an hour at a time.

We ride these roads every season — it's why we run motorcycle tours and keep a rental fleet in Sofia. This is our honest rider's introduction to Bulgaria: the roads, the culture stops that are actually worth getting off the bike for, and the practical reality of riding here.

Why Bulgaria, specifically

Three reasons, in order of importance to anyone who rides. First, the geography: the Balkan range runs the full width of the country west to east, and the Rila–Rhodope massif fills the south — which means the road network has no choice but to climb, twist and summit, over and over. Second, the emptiness: outside July weekends, the mountain passes carry a fraction of the traffic of anything comparable in Western Europe. Third, the economics: fuel, food, and good hotels cost enough less that a week's tour here compares to a long weekend in the Alps. The riding is the headline; the value is why you can afford more of it.

The roads we keep coming back to

The Shipka Pass. The classic. A stacked series of hairpins climbing the Balkan range, history soaked into every switchback — this pass decided a war in 1877 — and at the top, a short detour to Buzludzha, the abandoned concrete saucer we wrote a whole story about. Riding up to a Cold War UFO on mountain hairpins is the single most Bulgarian motorcycle experience available.

The Rhodope roads. The south is a different world — tighter, greener, more remote. The roads threading toward Trigrad and Yagodina run directly through river gorges with rock walls closing in overhead, the kind of riding where you slow down voluntarily just to stay in the moment. Combine with the Devil's Throat cave and you've got a full day that mixes proper riding with proper wonder.

The Rila loop. Our most popular day format from Sofia, and the best single-day introduction to riding here: mountain curves out of the capital, a sweeping climb into the Rila range, and the cultural anchor of Rila Monastery — a thousand years of art and architecture sitting at the end of a genuinely great road. The monastery forecourt full of parked touring bikes is a regular sight in season, and there's a reason for that.

The high Balkan traverses. For multi-day tours, the long west-east game of crossing and re-crossing the main range — pass after pass, with old mountain towns like Koprivshtitsa (a perfectly preserved 19th-century revolutionary town) as overnight stops. This is where Bulgaria stops being a destination and becomes a riding country.

Getting off the bike (worth it here)

Plenty of riding destinations have nothing at the end of the road. Bulgaria's roads keep delivering you to things: monasteries, Thracian tombs, gorge-side fish restaurants, thermal spa towns where an evening soak fixes a long day in the saddle. Our multi-day routes are built on exactly this rhythm — serious riding stitched together with wine tastings, village dinners and history told properly. The 5-day wine-and-traditions route and the 8-day deep-secrets tour exist because one day is never enough once people have tasted the combination.

The practical reality

Season: May through October is the window; June and September are the sweet spot — warm, clear, and quiet. High passes can hold surprises in early May and late October.

Road quality: honestly mixed, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't ridden here. Main routes and the touring passes are good; back roads can turn characterful without warning. This is part of why guided routes matter — we know which spectacular-looking shortcut is a pothole festival and which unmarked detour is the best surface in the region.

The rental question: bringing your own bike across Europe is a beautiful pilgrimage and a logistical tax. Our fleet in Sofia — BMW and Yamaha touring machines, currently including the F900XR, F800GT, R1200R and MT-07 Tracer — comes with full gear rental (helmet, jacket, gloves, protection) and third-party insurance, so flying in with a license and a duffel bag is a fully valid strategy. Fly Friday, ride Saturday.

Guided or solo: Bulgaria is absolutely rideable independently, and we'll happily just rent you a bike. But the guided small-group format — an expert local rider leading, luggage handled on multi-days, routes tuned daily to weather — is how you compress years of local road knowledge into one trip. Groups stay small, the pace accommodates different riding styles, and the guide knows where the police like to stand, which we mention purely as cultural information.
